Starting a business has been a tale of two countries for Scott McLean, owner of Chuffed Coffee tucked in a secret spot on high street in downtown Auckland. Scott grew up in New Zealand and enjoyed the life but made the move across the ditch to Sydney, Australia and opened a café in Darlinghurst.

The Sydney coffee scene is one of high competition and some fussy coffee drinkers, a challenge Scott confronted and ultimately enjoyed. The challenge of satisfying coffee drinkers of Sydney took some years, after which Scott made the move back to Auckland and opened Chuffed Coffee in the heart of the city.

Scott encountered similar challenges to other business owners, but the location of the store was the most crippling to overcome. Chuffed Coffee is in a high foot traffic area of Auckland, but being set back off the footpath was difficult. Not shirking from the task, Scott stood out the front of his store and handed out free samples to develop passers-by into regulars. These lucky early adopters are now among the dozens of regulars Scott and his team serve the same cup of coffee every day.

While the location and consistent customer base were the most obvious challenges, Scott also encountered the same workplace challenges as other business owners. All the standard questions on how to pay staff, draw up contracts, manage casuals, and implement the correct safety procedures were now upon Scott because his knowledge of workplace relations was Australian based. The new market meant a new and challenging employment relations system.

Scott’s story is one of many for clients of Employsure, an excellent business idea perfectly executed with the pool of workplace relations knowledge being the only missing element. Despite the competition from the cafe artwork, Scott’s passion beams brightly from his café and no distance from the street will hide such care for each customer.
