Christmas and New Year Public Holiday Explainer

Christmas can sometimes become a lost no-man’s land of days, where one is eating Pavlova for breakfast and Roast Potatoes for bedtime snacks. What days are the bins going out? Is it 2022 yet? Will the Turkey leftovers ever all be eaten? We can’t answer any of that for you, but here’s an explanation of New Zealand’s public holiday dates for Christmas 2021.

Christmas Day

Saturday 25th December 2021

Christmas Day falls on a Saturday in 2021, so New Zealand have the Monday off as a public holiday.

Boxing Day

Sunday 26th December 2021

Boxing day falls on a Sunday, so New Zealand have a public holiday on Tuesday 28th December 2021.

Monday 27th December

As Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, New Zealand have a public holiday on Monday 27th December 2021.

Tuesday 28th December

Boxing Day falls on a Sunday, so the public holiday is on Tuesday 28th December 2021.

New Year’s Day

Saturday 1st January 2022

Monday 3rd January                 

As New Year’s day falls on a Saturday, the public holiday is given on the Monday the 3rd January 2022.

Day After New Year’s Day

As the day after New Year’s day falls on a Sunday, the usual public holiday for this day is given on Tuesday 4th January 2022.
