How To Prevent The Spread Of Coronavirus At Work

This blog is up to date as of Tuesday 17 March 2020.

One of the most impactful ways to mitigate or slow the spread of the coronavirus is through proper hygiene in places where many people gather, such as the workplace.

Experts still do not have a complete picture of coronavirus, including how it is transmitted. However, some evidence has been collected and some things are known about how this virus spreads from person to person.

Here are steps to follow to help protect yourself and others.

How It Spreads

There is evidence that the virus spreads from person-to-person.

The virus is most likely spread through:

  • close contact with an infectious person
  • contact with droplets from an infected person’s cough or sneeze
  • touching objects or surfaces (like doorknobs or tables) that have cough or sneeze droplets from an infected person, and then touching your mouth or face

Here are some hygiene tips.

Wash Your Hands Thoroughly

  1. Use soap and water
  2. Rub soap all over your hands and wrist for at least 20 seconds
  3. Rinse your hands under running water
  4. Dry hands with paper towel or dryer

Cover Your Cough and Sneeze

  1. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue
  2. Dispose of your used tissue
  3. Do not cough into your hands. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow.
  4. Wear a facemask if you are sick

Consider providing your employees with a memorandum about the outbreak and importance of exercising good hygiene.
